What’s the difference between cryptocurrency and points??
Hello, I’m Perorin, a devout Weekly Jump reader.
This time, I’d like to think about the difference between cryptocurrency and points.
The topic came up while I was still reading Weekly Shonen Jump, which I subscribe to every week.
In issue 33 of 2018, there was a 50th anniversary issue featuring "Kochikame" (Kochi Kame), and in it, Ryotsu and Nakagawa had the following exchange.
Ryotsu: “Cryptocurrency is like points that can only be used at that shop.”
Nakagawa: “To put it roughly—”
Reading this, I thought that at least in the public perception, that’s probably how it is.
Indeed, the recent pattern of “issuing cryptocurrency…” feels, as Ryotsu says, like it’s just issuing points with a cryptocurrency label.
However, if it’s issued merely as points, I don’t think it would truly capture the essence of cryptocurrency, which lies in its unique properties.
So, this time I decided to compare cryptocurrency and points and consider what properties cryptocurrency should have.
On that basis, I’ll think about what kinds of uses would make issuing cryptocurrency meaningful.
