End-of-month anomaly risk alert?!
The Nikkei Stock Average declined for the second day in a row.
It fell below the 25-day moving average for the first time in six business days since 6/21.
In the morning, broad selling led by economically sensitive stocks.
Due to sizable selling pressure in stock index futures, the downside widened and it temporarily fell below the 28,800 yen level.
There were moments of restraint, but in the afternoon it slid further to 28,735 yen (down 312 yen from the previous day).
With the month ending tomorrow (last trading day of the month),
some viewed the month-end sell-off as a caution against a month-end anomaly (a movement that cannot be logically explained), leading to profit-taking selling pressures.
The Mothers Index fell for the first time in six days.
As the overall Tokyo market remained weak, profit-taking pressure spread to the emerging market equities as well.
