General observation
Nikkei stock average declines slightly for the first time in two days.
In the morning, following the Nasdaq Composite's record highs on the 22nd, buying proceeded in high-tech shares and other areas.
At one point, it rose 123 yen from the previous day, to 20,907 yen.
After a brief upsurge, selling dominated again and it slipped into negative territory, briefly down to 22,860 yen (24 yen lower).
Thereafter, it recovered and traded at a firm level toward the midday close.
In the afternoon, there was little movement. The overall mood was cautious.
The Mothers Index rose for a second straight day.
It finished higher steadily.
