Nikkei stock average rebounds for the first time in two days.
In the morning session, following gains in the previous Friday’s European and U.S. equities, buying led the way.
At one point it rose to 29,208 yen (259 yen higher than the previous Friday's close).
After turning, it struggled to extend the gains amid selling, then recovered at times, but the gains narrowed again, pulling back to 29,026 yen (77 yen higher).
In the afternoon, during the lunch break, U.S. stock index futures outside regular hours were modestly higher, and the Nikkei futures recovered, leading to a brief firm tone.
Thereafter, it traded in the upper 29,100s in a narrow range and rose toward the close, but the morning high could not be reached.
A recovery back to the 29,000 yen level for the first time in a week, since the close of 29,019 yen on May 10 (about a month ago’s high).
Hardware-related and high-priced tech stocks supported the index.
The Mothers Index extended its gains for the sixth day in a row.
With the broad Tokyo market holding steady, buying also came into leading names in the emerging markets.
