• Concentration of corporate locations in one central urban area becomes a turning point.
Nikkei, using the National Tax Agency system, analyzed domestic companies’ headquarters locations; in FY2020, the number of companies relocating their headquarters from Tokyo increased by more than 20% compared to FY2019.
There is a notable shift of asset-light small and medium-sized service businesses to suburban and regional cities.
• In Nikkei’s summary of 2021 wage trends survey,
the average wage increase rate, combining regular pay raises and across-the-board basic pay increases (baseアップ, BEA), fell 0.18 points from the previous year to 1.82%.
This is below 2% for the first time in eight years. About one in four responding companies said labor unions did not push for BEA.
• Toyota <7203> [closing price 9,135 yen], Tokyo Electric Power Company <9501> [closing price 345 yen], Chubu Electric Power <9502> [closing price 1,313.5 yen], in a joint venture with JERE (Tokyo, Chuo) as a half-and-half investment,
are developing technology to reuse used vehicle batteries as stationary storage batteries.
If affordable storage batteries using used parts can be produced, it would accelerate the spread of renewable energy.
• Children’s vision decline shows no sign of slowing.
With the COVID-19 pandemic causing more time for games and other activities due to staying at home, deterioration may worsen further.
• The government is considering the relaxation of SPACs (Special Purpose Acquisition Companies) in the United States.
It will be explicitly stated in the growth strategy to be decided by the Cabinet in June.
In Japan, investor protection and listing checks are expected to be stronger than in the United States.
• In the summer 2021 bonus survey (as of May 13, interim results), the payout amount fell 3.64% year-on-year to 730,923 yen.
The negative result marks the lowest payout level in eight years, and the payout has not been this low since 2013 for three consecutive years.
The Pfizer vaccine in the United States has been shown to be highly effective against the coronavirus based on overseas vaccination results.
In addition to the UK variant, it is effective against the India variant, which is said to be particularly transmissible.
A similar effect is expected for the Moderna vaccine in the United States.
