Nikkei 225 Stock Average fell sharply for the first time in four days.
Following the momentum of the Dow reaching a record high, it opened near 30,208 yen (up 119 yen from the previous day), but profit-taking sold off after three straight advances up to the previous day.
It initially turned downward, and subsequent rebound was limited, slipping back into negative territory again.
In the late afternoon, there was a moment when the decline widened to 29,665.5 yen (down 423 yen from the previous day).
There was also talk that profit-taking selling intensified after the market crossed the 30,000 level.
And with selling to realize profits spreading more than expected, the decline likely widened as well.
The Mothers Index also fell for the first time in six days.
