Large decline after four days of gains
The Nikkei Stock Average fell sharply for the first time in four trading days.
In the morning, buoyed by strong U.S. economic indicators, the Dow Jones Industrial Average in the United States rose to a new high, opening around 30,208 yen (up 119 yen from the previous close).
It later reversed course and moved erratically, briefly dropping to 20,811 yen (down 278 yen from the previous close).
The Mothers Index fell after an initial rise, marking its first decline in six days.
