Dividend and entitlement
The Nikkei Stock Average rose for the third consecutive trading day.
On the back of expectations for a continued recovery in the U.S. economy, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average hitting new highs while the Nasdaq Composite continued higher in the prior session, buying led.
Right after the opening, it recovered to the 29,500 yen level.
Although it then stalled, by the end of the first half session it rose to 29,514 yen (up 337 yen from the previous day).
Moves toward end-March dividends and rights, and buying futures for reinvestment of dividends toward the close, were in focus, keeping the market tight.
The Nikkei Average fell about 1,810 yen and recovered about 1,070 yen.
The Mothers Index turned positive briefly but finished the day in the low range, down for the second day.
