Hello everyone, this is Okachanman. As for this week's points of note from Okachanman, I’ve listed two key points for this week. COVID-19 (novel coronavirus), which has been appearing repeatedly lately. And another one is key remarks from influential figures this week.
First about the coronavirus: last week the yen weakened sharply. The dollar/yen rose above 112, and while stocks were falling due to risk-off sentiment, the yen also weakened, so this is something to watch this week as well. The coronavirus is spreading not only in Asia but also in the West, and some events are being canceled, so I am watching the global stock market this week.
Another item is remarks from key figures. This week's focus will be the FOMC. I think the FOMC meeting on March 18–19 is what people are watching, but about two weeks prior, key figure remarks tend to fade as they enter a blackout period. So I think remarks from FOMC members this week or next will be noteworthy. In March, negotiations between the UK and the EU on the FTAs will begin. The negotiation balance of power and who takes precedence before those talks start will be of interest, so remarks in this area are also noteworthy. Also regarding the UK, the MPC—the Bank of England's rate-setting committee. The last move was hold, but a rate cut in March remains a point of interest, so I plan to pay attention to those statements as well.
This week, there are relatively few major indicators. Therefore, I think the market will be moved more by statements or by situations like the coronavirus, influencing the market. For details such as the schedule, I’ve written about them on the blog, so please take a look there if you like.
Now, let's do our best this week as well. This was Okachanman.
