Hello everyone, this is Okachan-man. As part of Okachan-man's Weekly Highlights video, I’ve highlighted these points. First, US-China relations, and second, Middle East risks.
First, regarding US-China relations, the first phase of the US-China talks will have the signing of the agreement this week. The signing is on the 15th, and since the 13th, Vice Premier Liu of China has been visiting the United States. So, I’m paying attention to whether anything about the second phase of the talks or other US-China relations will come up. Also, the Taiwan presidential election is the second point. The presidential election—if pro-China forces lose to pro-democracy candidate Tsai Ing-wen—this is not something China would want to be touched upon. However, the United States treats Taiwan as a country and exports weapons, so if this topic comes up, it might be somewhat unwelcome for China. I’m keeping an eye on whether this will emerge this week.
Regarding the second point, Middle East risks, last week these risks had largely receded into a risk-on situation. Still, it isn’t a situation to celebrate. Over the weekend, Iran admitted that it was responsible for shooting down the Ukrainian passenger plane, which has angered Canada and Ukraine. Additionally, protests against the leadership intensified within Iran, and an English ambassador was briefly detained, which also angered the UK. There are still sparks of conflict remaining toward Iran, so I think the question is when this might flare up again.
This week, there are several economic indicators related to prices scheduled, which are indicators that could affect monetary policy, so I want to pay attention to those. The event schedule is also written on the blog, so if you have time, please refer to it.
Let's do our best this week as well. This was Okachan-man.
