Happy New Year everyone, I am Okachan-man. As part of Okachan-man's weekly points video, I’ve highlighted these as the points to watch this week. First, the Middle East situation, and second, the start of the New Year. First, on the Middle East: at the very start of the year, the United States attacked Iran, so Iran’s retaliation is being watched. If Iran retaliates, the United States has said it will retaliate even further, so I’m watching to see whether the cycle of retaliation escalates. Also, the Hormuz Strait is a focus, with concerns about it being blocked, and there were attacks on Japanese tankers last year, so I’m watching to see if something like that happens again. I’m also paying attention to whether the legitimacy of the US attack this time is questioned, and how surrounding countries will assess and respond.
As for the start of the New Year, the stock markets, starting today in Tokyo and across Japan with the big first-day rally, will begin to trade. The US and Europe opened a head start last week, but I think the main market participants will start returning this week. I also expect the direction of each currency pair to begin to emerge from this week.
This week, it seems we may see a risk-off mood as discussed earlier—how this risk-off is absorbed in response to Iran-US tensions—and how stock markets and other markets price in the developments will be key. There are employment statistics and important indicators coming up this weekend, so please check the blog for the schedule related to these events. I expect the markets to be volatile this week, so I want to trade carefully to avoid getting hit hard right at the start of the New Year.
Now, let's do our best this week as well. This was Okachan-man.
