Hello, everyone, I’m Okachan-man. In this week’s “What to Watch in One Minute” video, I’ve highlighted these points. First, U.S.-China talks, and second, the UK election. It’s continued from last week, but I still think headlines from the U.S.-China and the UK will move the markets this week.
Regarding the U.S.-China talks, the Hong Kong issue is at the center. On Sunday, local elections were held in Hong Kong. And as I’m recording this on Monday early morning, information is coming in that the pro-democracy camp is fairly strong in Hong Kong, and looks set to win a majority. So, with this situation, what moves will the Chinese government make, how will the United States respond? Also, with both sides acting on the Hong Kong issue, will this affect or shape the trade talks and potential agreement in the U.S.-China talks? That’s what I think will be the focus this week.
Next is the UK election. The real point of interest remains the ruling party’s poll numbers. Currently polls show support around 43% to 46%. Whether this holds as is will be the biggest point of attention. Also, last week’s weaker-than-expected economic indicators have led to speculation about rate cuts and a pound-rate-cut expectation. So, I think it’s worth watching whether the rate cut expectations will increase, advance, or fade away.
This week, headlines are likely to drive markets. There are some economic indicators to watch, and there will also be several remarks by key figures. For details on the schedule of those events, please check the blog.
Now, let’s do our best this week as well. This was Okachan-man.
