Why BB opens up in pairs: what to check when aiming for a big wave
BB Watch's developer is "Namikoro." This time, I will supplement how the Bollinger Bands for the time-frame pairs expand together.
"Why do we look at the pair's expansion, not just a single time frame, when a resistance is broken?" Once you understand the mechanism, you can organize why you enter by waiting for the expansion, and why you don't chase when they don't align.
As the price moves, that movement is reflected across multiple time frames. If the price dispersion increases within each calculation period, the BB expands for the pair. Combining the price movement in the direction you are aiming for with this expansion forms the basis for taking a trade in this approach.
What appears in the width of BB is price dispersion
Typical BBs plot around a simple moving average of a fixed number of price points. Let the standard deviation representing dispersion from the mean be σ, and the multiplier be k; the calculation is in the following form.
Upper band = simple moving average + k × σ
Lower band = simple moving average − k × σ
Width = 2 × k × σ
If the multiplier is fixed, the width expands as dispersion increases. Here we consider BB calculated using closing prices. We are not directly measuring volume or order flow.
The source of the calculation isMetaTrader 5 Official Help: Bollinger Bands.
For example, when price moves within a narrow range and then moves upward from there. The difference arises between the prices that remained in the calculation and the newly added higher price. As dispersion from the mean increases, the bands widen. The same mechanism applies when price moves downward.
Therefore, expansion alone cannot distinguish up from down. Observe the price direction on the chart, and confirm whether the BB expansion accompanies that movement. BB does not move the price; rather, the width reflects the calculated result of the price movement.
Why pair expansion overlaps in large waves
Even with the same 20-period, a 15-minute chart uses 20 prices at 15-minute intervals, while an hourly chart uses 20 prices at hourly intervals. Even if the number of data points is the same, the time span viewed and the prices extracted differ.
When using closing prices, the hourly close is the last price of that period. It is not the average of four 15-minute closes. Changing the time frame means extracting the same price movement at different intervals. The handling of time frames and price data is described inthe MQL5 Official Reference.
Even if the price rises quickly in a short time, that change may be limited to the near-term range. On a 15-minute chart, dispersion may be increasing, but compared to the price history viewed on the hourly chart, it may still be small. In this case, only the shorter intervals may expand first.
From there, if the price moves higher and the dispersion used in the hourly calculation also increases, the widths on both time frames widen. This explains why pair expansion appears in a large upward wave, based on this calculation mechanism.
Looking at the pair, you can see not only near-term changes but also whether dispersion has increased over longer timeframes. However, expansion does not always occur from the shorter interval first. In a major sudden move, both may respond at once.
Here, pair synchronization means that the expansion overlaps on the two chosen timeframes. A breakout found on the shorter time frame appears as a change in the longer frame's calculation. Reading this together with the price direction is the reason for considering a trade.
What to wait for when they don’t align
The price breaks above the range ceiling and the 15-minute BB expands. Yet, the hourly chart stays flat or contracts. If you require expansion on the longer time frame as a condition, the trade criteria are not yet met.
This is a scene where you should beware of false breakouts that end after a brief move within a range. Do not rush to buy; check whether the price can stay above the upper bound and whether expansion appears on the hourly chart as well. If the price returns to the range while you wait for conditions, you can skip that trade.
For example, when the price briefly clears the upper bound and then returns. The shorter-timeframe price differences remain in the shorter bars, but the hourly close may show little to no breakout. In such a case, there is value in confirming both price maintenance and pair follow-through rather than simply chasing the shorter-timeframe expansion. This is a hypothetical scenario used to explain the mechanism.
On the other hand, the current prices are also reflected in the forming longer bars. It is not necessary to wait for the longer bar to finish. You assess the current price and the changes in both bars, and decide according to your conditions.
If the price holds above the breached level and then expansion aligns, you can re-evaluate the trade. Conversely, if price returns to the range while waiting for conditions, you do not pursue the breakout. This discrimination is how BB Watch supports "false breakout avoidance." Because waiting delays entry, you should also confirm the room to the next resistance.
Deciding the wave and place to target first
If you use pair expansion as the entry basis, first select the chart scenario. Will you target a range breakout, or a pullback after a trend break? Decide which wave you want to ride and from around which price level you will take it.
For example, aim for the 4-hour upwave, and view the 1-hour and 15-minute bars as a pair. Confirm the range ceiling on the 4-hour chart and the resistance beyond it. If the price breaks above the ceiling and moves higher, and expansion appears on the chosen pair, add it to your buy rationale.
Before buying, confirm that the breached level remains intact. Compare the remaining room to the next resistance with your assessment. If expansion aligns and the price has moved too far, you may decide to wait for a pullback or pass on the trade.
This H4-H1-M15 combination is one example. If you are aiming for a 15-minute wave in scalping, you can also pair 5-minute with 1-minute charts. Choose the time frames according to the wave size you target and your method.
The same order applies when aiming for a corrective wave. First decide the place and direction, then wait for the pair expansion corresponding to the movement in that direction. Following only the dispersion width can make it unclear what you are participating in.
Distinguishing the wide and the expanding in progress
After a big move, the BB width may remain wide. However, a wide state and an expanding state are not the same. When looking at pair synchronization, compare the width of each time frame to the chosen reference.
When viewing forming bars, the display updates with price updates. When viewing confirmed bars, the two time frames’ confirming times are not necessarily the same. By aligning “which width was compared to what,” you can reduce misreading of expansion. Handling forming-data is described inthe MQL5 Official Reference on Time Series Dataas well.
When reading pair follow-through, past price movements in calculations also matter. If far-away old prices drop out of the calculation, even if the current price is rising, the width can narrow. Also, if price rises at a steady pace, the width may move forward with a relatively constant width. After holding a position, review changes in width together with new highs and lows to verify that the anticipated price level remains.

Next, think about entry and profit management on a real chart

To compare pairs at the waiting place
Decide the target scene. When price moves in that direction, confirm the chosen pair's expansion. If conditions do not align, wait without chasing.
BB Watch allows you to line up the BB widths and changes of the chosen time frames to compare. It is a tool to consider the trade while observing the pair’s state when the price reaches the decided level on the chart.
