This Week’s Key FX Topics
USD/JPY clearly broke below the 155 line that had been defended even by the May and July interventions (totaling 27 trillion yen), plunging temporarily to the low 154s (the lowest since February 23). The view is spreading that this is a natural yen appreciation driven by real demand and position unwinding.
With the U.S. returning from the Labor Day holiday and few fresh catalysts, market focus is on the U.S. PPI on September 10 and CPI on September 11. With the FOMC on September 16 and the BOJ meeting on September 18 ahead, a wait-and-see mood is also mixing in.
Expectations for the BOJ to hike rates early and consecutively remain strong, creating conditions where reports about a 0.5% hike or multiple hikes within the year can easily accelerate yen buying. Continued vigilance is also warranted over U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent’s pressure to correct yen weakness.
An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said, “The agreement between Iran and Oman is in its final stage,” and details of a temporary safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz are expected to be priced in. The easing of geopolitical risks may also remove a support factor for the dollar.
Be mindful of the risk that Europe’s political uncertainty, such as the surge of a far-right party in the Saxony-Anhalt state election in Germany, could spill over via crosses against the yen. Along with movements in crude oil and gold prices, we want to keep a close eye on safe-haven flows.
