【Episode 3】CHAOS_GOLD The Reason for Not Operating Only on Thursdays—How 4 Days of Operation Stabilizes Revenue Curve
“Why don’t you move only on Thursdays?”
Among the common questions from people who started using CHAOS_GOLD_LISKOFF_MT5, one of the first is that while Monday–Wednesday and Friday operate, Thursday is completely off in the program. Unlike weekend market closures, Thursday is moving in the normal market, yet the design deliberately keeps it off.
“If there are days when it doesn’t operate, aren’t you missing opportunities?” Some might think so. In reality, it’s the opposite, excluding Thursday stabilized the 7-year revenue curve, contributing to PF2.96 and RF11.49.
This time, I will explain in detail why Thursday was chosen and excluded, including the weekly patterns of the gold market and the underlying design philosophy.
The core of the anomaly method was that there is a statistical bias in certain time zones. However, even with entries at the same 21:00, 18:00, 4:00,the bias strength differs by day of the week.
When analyzing seven years of gold market data, Thursday showed several unstable characteristics compared to other days.
In particular, the weekly Thursday release of initial jobless claims can deviate greatly from expectations, sometimes triggering 100–200 dollar swings in gold. For EA that relies on “temporal statistical advantage,” such sharp indicator-driven moves are noise that undermines the design’s premise.
Monday–Wednesday and Friday, four trading days, provide an environment where anomaly biases function more reliably. Thursday breaks that premise—this is the fundamental reason for introducing a weekly holiday.
A common oversight in EA design is the importance of the choice to not operate. Many EAs aim to maximize how many trades they make. However, to sustain win rate and PF over the long term,it is effective to eliminate trades in low-edge scenarios.
Compared to not excluding Thursday in backtests, including all five days of operation increased losses on a monthly and weekly basis, lowering annual PF. This paradoxically improves total profits and stability over seven years by reducing operating days. This demonstrates the superiority of the approach: prioritize eliminating losing scenarios over trying to increase opportunities. The PF2.96 and RF11.49 are the result of these granular design choices.
“Courage to rest” is a philosophy that also applies to discretionary trading
When I traded discretionarily, I spent every day glued to the chart with a compulsive urge to act if there was movement. As a result, I repeatedly entered in edge-less situations and piled up losses.
There is a similar pitfall in EA design. A logic that can enter every day may seem efficient, but mixing in low-win-rate situations lowers long-term expected value.CHAOS_GOLD’s Thursday rest is a symbol of an edge-less day being identified and deliberately paused.
- Many trades
- Forced entries amid noise markets
- Short-term actions appear flashy
- PF and RF degrade over the long term
- Focus on four days with edge
- Completely avoid noise days (Thursday)
- Short-term may feel unsatisfying
- PF and RF remain stable for 7 years
“Doing nothing on Thursdays” is not a flaw.Seven years of statistics backing a deliberate design.
On Thursday with EA running, even if you open MT5, no new entries will be made. Some may worry, “Nothing happens today, is it okay?” This is exactly as designed, so rest assured.
- Check the unrealized P/L of held positions
- Ensure margin maintenance rate is in an appropriate range
- Understand the market environment before trading on Friday
- Review weekly reports to grasp market direction
The fact that nothing happens on Thursday indicates the EA is operating as designed. It is recommended to review positions weekly and prepare for the next week’s operation.
If you have open positions on Thursday, they were opened before Wednesday. Thursday does not place new entries, but existing positions’ settlement logic operates as usual.
- Thursday concentrates noise due to three factors: weekly indicators, position unwinding, and anomaly elimination
- Excluding Thursday stabilized PF and RF over seven years
- Designing to exclude losing scenarios rather than increase opportunities is key to long-term stability
- Lack of movement on Thursday is not a defect but a deliberate design based on statistics
