【EA Basics Explained】

This time I would like to整理 from the basics of “What is an EA in the first place?”

What is EA?

EA is a type of FX automatic trading, abbreviation for “Expert Advisor.”

It is software that runs inside the MetaTrader (MT4/MT5) trading platform developed by MetaQuotes, and automatically repeats trades according to pre-embedded programs.

In other words, instead of a human looking at charts to decide entries and exits,

it trades in a steady, program-driven manner.

What is the current mainstream?

As of 2024, MT4 (MetaTrader 4) remains mainstream.

However, the successor MT5 (MetaTrader 5) is steadily gaining traction, and the shift will gradually proceed in the future.

EA types are diverse

There are many types of EAs, from “fully automated trading” to “semi-discretionary.”

Semi-discretionary EA

For example, an EA where entries are automatic but exits are manual.

Suitable for those who want to incorporate the trader’s own judgment.

Fully automatic trading EA

An EA that handles entries to exits completely automatically.

Within that, there are various methods such as scalping, trend-following, and mean-reversion.

Thus, EA is highly diverse,

and choosing an EA that suits your funds, personality, and operating style is the most important.

Summary

EA is “FX auto trading software that runs on MetaTrader.”

Currently MT4 is central, but a shift to MT5 is expected to progress.

Also, there are many types of EAs, each with its own merits and demerits.
