There are many people in the world who are called “mentors.”
Many people choose mentors in life and business and try to follow their advice, but
there are various types of mentors, and sometimes they cause confusion.
Reasons mentors push their own path
Even mentors have people whose livelihoods depend on them.
Therefore, at times they deny other mentors’ opinions or behave as if their approach is the only correct one.
If you compare this to mountain climbing, everyone aims for the same summit, but
just because the trail differs, some insist that “my path is the right one” and deny others’ paths.
In the end, there are multiple ways to reach the top,
and by saying “listen to me!” and denying others, the guided person can become confused and not know what is correct.
A true mentor respects other opinions
A true mentor is someone who respects others’ opinions and approaches and
understands that the ultimate goal is the same peak.
It’s important to be able to incorporate other mentors’ insights and present the big picture, such as saying, “This method has these advantages, but other methods can also reach the summit.”
If you can’t do that and instead push your own path (approach),
it may not be a true mentor in the original sense.
Choosing mentors to avoid becoming a “senior nuisance”
Even as mentors age and gain experience, if they cling to their own approach and fail to respect others,
they can be called a “senior nuisance.”
This isn’t merely an age issue; it stems from a lack of flexible thinking.
Choosing which mentors to follow and which opinions to heed is very important.
In mentor selection, I think it’s essential to look for someone with broad vision who can respect other paths (approaches).
Conclusion
Ultimately, the most important thing is whether a mentor can understand other opinions and show that everyone is aiming for the same summit.
A mentor with that perspective is truly trustworthy.
Well then!
