EA developers gauge the quality of an EA through
“backtesting”.
So as users,
in order to “discern the quality of an EA,”
you will need the skill of evaluating backtesting results.
With that in mind, this series will
write about “how to find EAs that win from backtests.”
Maximum win streak (amount) and maximum loss streak (amount)
Maximum win streak (number of trades) and maximum loss streak (number of trades)
Average win and loss
These are not particularly used as criteria to judge the quality of an EA.
This is largely determined by the type of EA as well.
If you are scalping, you will have many win streaks,
and if you are trend-following, the amount at the time of the maximum win streak will be high.
If anything, it is useful for understanding roughly how many consecutive losses you might face,
and you may want to incorporate that into your operating assumptions.
Also,
in real trading,
if the past backtests show a maximum of five consecutive losses,
and if you actually experience four or five consecutive losses,
in terms of probability, the next trade is likely to win,
so sizing your lot as a probabilistic approach is one way to think about it.
