To begin with
EA developers assess the quality of an EA through
“backtesting.”
So as users
to “evaluate the quality of an EA,”
you need the skill of evaluating backtests.
With that in mind, in this series
we will write about “how to find winning EAs from backtests.”
【About the spread】
This section is extremely important.
Please be sure to check this.
First,
The unit of spread displayed in backtests is“points”.
10 points = 1 pip.
So
if backtest shows “5,” that's 0.5 pips.
It is by no means 5 pips.
Even the narrowest spreads for USD/JPY or EUR/USD
are not realistic at 0.5 pips.
In the morning, spreads can widen dramatically.
In the worst case“spread loss”can occur,
the more you trade, the more you may lose over time.
Now in my EA development, I adopt the following spread settings
that show a rising trend, and
finally verify with the TDS variable spread.
USD/JPY, EUR/USD… 1.5 pips
USD/CAD, EUR/JPY, GBP/USD… 2.0 pips
GBP/JPY, AUD/CAD… 3.0 pips
and so on.
Even with other external fees, I design spreads that can be covered by such spread settings when developing EAs.
