In the 1980s, charismatic American trader Richard Dennis made a bet with his friend William Eckhart on whether “traders can be trained.”

Dennis believed, “If there are reproducible trading strategies and rules, anyone can profit.” Eckhart, on the other hand, bet against it.

They advertised widely in newspapers to recruit trader candidates, and from among them selected elite members. They learned trading rules such as trading methods, position sizing, and risk management during a mere two-week training program.

And when they actually operated with a million dollars, they achieved remarkable performance. In other words, the bet favored Dennis. This is the very famous “Turtles” story in the world of investing.

By the way, the reason they were called Turtles is that during an Asia trip, when they saw turtle farming, they thought, “Can we train traders in the same way as turtle farming?”

The results produced many profitable traders, but at the same time questions arose...

“They recruited trader candidates with large newspaper ads and from among themselected elite members.”

Here lies the issue.

There are voices that perhaps they chose only highly capable people, even without prior investment experience.
