Early Movements of the Year
The turbulent year 2020 has ended and the 2021 market has begun. As the 2020 market was so volatile, I think this year may not see as much volatility, but since mid-January there have been uneasy movements in stock prices.
The VIX index, which measures the volatility of the S&P 500, rose to 82.69% in March last year (Chart ①). Before the COVID shock, it hovered in the teens around 14%. The VI index for the Nikkei 225, which measures its volatility, rose to 60.86% on March 16. Before the COVID shock, it also hovered around 14–15%. Volatilities of 60% or 80% are historically very high levels.
