NASDAQ & GAFA
Introducing the U.S. stock indices that drew constant attention in 2020 and the four major IT companies by market capitalization that dominated the scene
Overview of the NASDAQ Composite
A stock index calculated as a market-capitalization-weighted average of all listed companies on NASDAQ, the exchange established and operated by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) for emerging companies since 1971.
Because many are IT-related venture firms, their performance tends to reflect in stock movements. Since the giants that occupy the top market caps are world-renowned companies, it has become one of the representative stock indices of the United States.
Overview of GAFA
A term referring to the four major U.S. high-tech companies with especially strong influence in the IT field, often called “digital platforms.”
Taken from their initials: Google (search engine and online ads), Apple (digital devices such as iPhone and Mac and their OS), Facebook (a massive social network with over 2.7 billion active users), and Amazon (the world's largest online retailer).
As top market-cap companies listed on NASDAQ, their huge size significantly affects the overall index movements.
