In the 1980s, Japan was the world’s second-largest economy
As of 2020, judging from Japan’s economic position in the world, one might not imagine it, but in the 1980s Japan was so prosperous that it was called Pax Japonica.
Pax (Peace) is the goddess of peace. Originating from Pax Romana, the Latin phrase referring to the Roman Empire’s era of peace and prosperity centered around Rome, roughly from before Christ to around 180 CE.
In modern times, it has been used to denote dominance of the world economy, initially starting with Pax Britannica. From the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century to the early 20th century, Britain ruled the seas with formidable military power, and prosperity centered on Britain. This era helped English become the world’s common language.
From World War II onward, the United States led development, termed Pax Americana. It governed the world with overwhelming military and economic power, and the US took on the role of world police.
