After Long-Term Study, I Inherited Ichimoku Sanjin
IguchiThis time I am very looking forward to interviewing someone I deeply respect, Tetsuo Hosoda. When you think of Hosoda, you think of Ichimoku Kinko Hyo, which was devised by his grandfather, Ichimoku Sanjin. Hosoda is explaining Ichimoku Kinko Hyo as the third generation, but first please tell us about your background up to inheriting Ichimoku Sanjin and an overview of Ichimoku Kinko Hyo.
HosodaIchimoku Kinko Hyo began when my grandfather, Ichimoku Sanjin, self-published and spread it to the world around Showa 44. By the way, I was born in Showa 43, so I am almost the same age as Ichimoku Kinko Hyo. The Ichimoku Kinko Hyo itself probably existed in Ichimoku Sanjin's mind around Showa 10.
My grandfather passed away when I was about in the second year of junior high school. After his death, no one continued Ichimoku Sanjin, and only the books remained sold at Chiyoda Shoten in Kabutocho. After his death, various people began to speak about Ichimoku Kinko Hyo on their own.
IguchiIndeed, many people talk about Ichimoku Kinko Hyo, don't they.
HosodaWhen my grandfather's eyes still shone, no one spoke nonsense. The father who should have inherited the second generation became ill when I was 20. With little life expectancy left, he considered how to preserve Ichimoku Kinko Hyo and established Economic Variability Research Institute. At the institute, they conduct projects related to Ichimoku Kinko Hyo, including book publishing. They began reprinting the book around 1992, and soon after my father passed away. At that time I had read books about Ichimoku Kinko Hyo but knew almost nothing about the market. Then I asked Mr. Takeuchi, who was the organizer of the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo study group, for assistance, and I took over the company and continued to the present. I took over when I was 22 and started market commentary using Ichimoku Kinko Hyo when I was 35.
IguchiSo you studied the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo and markets for a long time.
HosodaI studied for more than 10 years. In the old days there were no PCs, so drawing charts by hand was the norm.
IguchiI drew by hand as well.
HosodaWhen I was around 20, I obtained past data by going to libraries and copying from newspaper microfilms. At that time, to study the market you had to read books while drawing your own charts, comparing what you drew with what the book said, and do a back-and-forth process. In particular, Ichimoku Kinko Hyo books do not present themselves in a textbook-like manner, so it’s understandable that people who only touched it say many different things. It required a lot of time to study.
IguchiYou studied the orthodox ways of using Ichimoku Kinko Hyo.
HosodaIt was miserable, though.
IguchiMiserable?
HosodaEven when you understood the important points, you couldn’t judge the market in real time. Looking back, you can see it was correct, but there were long periods when you could not make confident buy or sell decisions while following the market. The time when you couldn’t answer, “How is the current market?” was very long and it was very miserable. Young traders also attended study sessions, and they were much more experienced, which was a learning experience for me as well.
IguchiTo master the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo, you need tremendous study.
