The Faces of Geniuses Were Approachable
IguchiAs a specialist in information engineering and financial engineering, having collaborated with Nobel Prize in Economics winner Dr. William Sharpe and Israel Mossad scientific advisor Dr. Miller, Mr. Okumura is highly active in the finance field, including fund management. Please tell us about his background and the episodes from those times.
OkumuraI came from an engineering department and studied artificial intelligence as a student. My origin is technology, but I entered the financial world through the connection between technology and finance.
IguchiDid you handle a wide range of finance, such as stocks, forex, and commodities?
OkumuraWhen I was at the securities company, I mostly dealt with equities, but I also belonged to the self-trading desk and was involved in research and trading of currencies and commodities.
I first engaged in product development through joint research with Dr. Sharpe. I met him for the first time in 1988, before he won the Nobel Prize. He was a great figure who created the concept of beta in stocks, yet he was never arrogant. When I visited the United States, he personally picked me up at the hotel in his car. We headed to the office together, and while driving on the highway, he opened the convertible top and joked around. I was a bit scared, but he was playful and approachable. The most surprising thing was that when visiting his office, there was a secretary who would serve tea, but the cups were not washed. Dr. Sharpe himself would wash the cups in the sink (laughs).
