◆ Lessons from the "Spanish Flu" and Preparing for the Second Wave
The explosive spread of the novel coronavirus is continuing. An economic example of the impact of this pandemic is the "Spanish flu." The Spanish flu, which spread worldwide from 1918 to 1920, was a "novel influenza" of that era, with a second and third wave. While the world population was about 2 billion at the time, it is said to have resulted in over 50 million deaths.
On April 8, the Chinese government lifted the Wuhan lockdown after two and a half months, though some voices say the lifting was too early. Experts also believe a second wave of infections could occur. In Japan, it may settle temporarily during the rainy season, but global outbreaks may not subside. Prepare for a recurrence in autumn and beyond.
