The yen weakness progresses with the spread of the novel coronavirus
Centered in Asia, the novel coronavirus is sweeping the world. Perhaps deterred by the spread of infection, the dollar-yen pair surged, breaking through a level that had held for a long time and advancing into the 112 yen range (as of February 21, 2020). If risk aversion intensifies, dollar buying during times of crisis is natural, but the rapid yen selling feels like money is being pulled from countries struggling with coronavirus measures, which leaves me with complicated feelings.
In any case, we can only hope things settle down soon, but the end of SARS, which began with a cluster outbreak in mid-November 2002, was not declared until July 2003, more than half a year later. A truly reassuring day may still be far off.
