The Year of Turmoil and the New Order
In 2019, various events occurred, including U.S.–China trade tensions, the chaos surrounding Brexit in the United Kingdom, the Hong Kong issue, and the birth of Christine Lagarde as the new president of the European Central Bank (ECB). Future historians may regard this year as the year of turmoil and the new order.
From a market perspective, it seems the year was heavily influenced by statements from politicians and political events. In the stock market, major U.S. stock indices reached record highs, while the foreign exchange market showed some of the smallest annual volatility in history for USD/JPY and EUR/USD (as of December 13, 2019). 2019 showed a completely different face depending on the market, but in this issue I would like to look back at 2019 in commodity markets.
