Hooked on the Turkish Lira on a friend's recommendation
Ebizawa: On Twitter, the “Turkey Lira Offline Gathering” and the “Lira Rangers” are buzzing, right? I’d like to talk with the woman who runs such a mysterious group. First, please tell us about your FX background—when did you start and what brought you into it.
CocominI started in March 2018. I had a strong interest in investing and used to attend investment seminars. I even invested in cryptocurrency for a while, but about a week after I started, the Coincheck incident happened at a bad time, which turned me off and I stopped. Then a acquaintance told me, “USD/JPY is a good buy now.”
I hadn’t heard of the Turkish Lira, and I thought FX was dangerous and something I should never get into, but when I heard that USD/TRY was around 27, and “now is the bottom. If you just buy, the swap interest will keep increasing your profits,” I started trading USD/TRY.
Ebizawa: Looking back at the chart now, that recommendation was quite troublesome, wasn’t it? (laughs)

CocominI thought that when doing FX, gathering information was necessary, so I attended seminars on high-interest currencies as well. There I was told that USD/TRY was the lowest it had ever been, so I thought, “After all, it’s a buy.” However, in hindsight, the atmosphere of the venue might have carried a negative aura (laughs).
Ebizawa: You mentioned USD/TRY was around 27 at the start; did you look at charts back then? It was a clean, steadily declining trend, I think.
CocominAt first I didn’t look at the charts at all, but after a while I started checking them daily. As I watched the charts, I began to understand the price movement characteristics in my own way, and realized that buying alone would not be enough. After that, I started gathering information on Twitter as well.
