The Era When Not Showing Your Face Means You Won’t Be Trusted
Editorial Team: Are the two of you originally close friends?
Crab Trader (hereafter Crab)We’ve only met three times. Aori, did you know about me from before?
AoriOf course I knew. Crab’s live trading streams on YouTube have been going on for quite a while, right?
CrabAbout a year and seven months.
AoriI’ve been at it about two years.
Editorial Team: It seems FX distributions by skilled traders with engaging content are increasing.
Now, for the main part, please tell us why you choose to stream with your faces revealed.
AoriI’ve always done face-reveal streams; the idea of not showing my face never occurred to me. If I were a viewer, I wouldn’t trust streams from people who hide their faces. I want to know who is talking, and the atmosphere and personality matter as well.
CrabI’m similar. At first I started with audio-only streams. I thought about revealing my face once I slimmed down. But since I decided to go with the Crab character, even if I’m overweight, it wouldn’t be obvious. So during the first video stream I wore a Crab mask. As you said, credibility and trust gained from showing your face are important.
Editorial Team: Do Crab and you personally feel that viewers trust face-revealed streams more and find them more entertaining?
CrabOf course. Even asking my channel’s viewers, many decide what to watch based on whether the streamer shows their face.
Editorial Team: It seems this is still in demand. Now, next question: when you’ve been distributing investment information, what has been worthwhile?
CrabFX is basically a solitary world, so having a space where like-minded people can gather and talk is very meaningful. I created the channel with that aim. How about you, Aori?
AoriFor me, I simply want to raise recognition; YouTube is a platform where the audience can grow rapidly, so I use it. At the core is the desire to shake up the world. It’s exciting to think that one tweet can move the world. I have a goal for my children to see, ‘This channel was created by dad.’
Editorial Team: So you want to increase influence.
CrabBut I don’t really think of myself as a YouTuber. Rather than earning ad revenue, I use YouTube to promote myself and share information. So my positioning is a bit different from general YouTubers.
Editorial Team: So you aren’t seeking Google AdSense income.
CrabThat’s right. If I were pursuing direct income, I’d do more brand deals and collaborations. For me, spreading my products and building new communities is more important.
Editorial Team: Crab, is there anything else about broadcasting that you’ve found worthwhile?
CrabBecause I show my trades to many people, I’m more conscious about strictly following rules. If I were doing it alone, I might have broken them. There’s a tension and self-discipline in having declared something and needing to adhere to it. If I say, ‘I’ll cut losses here,’ I feel compelled to change only with a proper reason later on.
Editorial Team: You likely have a lot of interactions with other traders; do you gain anything from those?
CrabYes. People are different, so approaches differ. Even with different methods, there are common ways of thinking.
AoriI expose the comments section of my videos, but among FX YouTubers, many don’t show comments. I think it’s to prevent flame wars. But I engage with various people in a public space. I ask people, ‘I think it will go down, what do you think?’
