Asked about living as a billionaire trader!
IguchiI think readers would also like to know, what kind of life does a person who earns billions from trading lead? Please tell us about weekdays and how you spend your holidays.
TametamOn weekdays, I wake around 8:30, trade until around 10 when the market value is settled. Then I have lunch with my wife, sit back at the computer again before 3 PM, and trade until the evening. When the kids come home, I cook, bathe them, and put them to bed, then around 9 PM I sit at the computer again and trade until about 3 AM. Then I sleep at 4, wake at 8:30. This repeats endlessly. Chronic sleep deprivation is awful (laughs). On holidays, I sleep more than on weekdays and spend time with my family from noon onward.
IguchiI thought you were glued to charts all the time, but that was surprising. You keep up with trades while taking care of your family.
TametamI wish I could spend even more time with my family.
IguchiIn such a lifestyle, you place large lots in trades and you’ve tweeted about quite a few losses. How big was last year’s maximum drawdown?
TametamLast year it was around 70 million yen...
IguchiWow! That’s a huge amount. By the way, was that on a single order?
TametamNo, not a single order; it was the total after adding positions. In a single order, it would be around 20–30 million yen several times.
IguchiAfter a loss of tens of millions, do you have the mental stamina to trade again?
TametamWhen I do, I do, but some FX firms cap the number of lots you can trade in a day, so if I can’t trade, I go cry in bed (laughs). Iguchi, what would you do?
IguchiI’d drink and pass out. After a big loss, I don’t have the energy to take positions again. However, we operate as a dealing team, and it’s the company’s loss, so the conditions are different from those of a full-time trader. Being able to manage that mental state alone is truly amazing.
