MT4 and MT5: Seven Reasons to Use Dow Theory
For those who have started FX and tried various methods, I think you’ve felt this at least once: “In the end, I don’t know what the right answer is.”
The more indicators you add, the more complex your judgments become, and the more you hesitate.
Counter-trend, momentum trading, scalping, swing—every time you change your method, you have to re-evaluate from scratch. I have repeated such detours for many years myself.
What I arrived at isDow Theory.
In this article, why trading on MT4 and MT5 should be anchored to Dow Theorywith seven reasons, including my own experience, I will share.
1. Early entries
One of the strengths of Dow Theory is that you can capture the initial move of a trend at a relatively early stage.
By judging trend reversals with the simple structure of higher highs and higher lows (or lower highs and lower lows), you tend to enter sooner than waiting for complex indicators.
Entering early means, you can seize the larger upside potential.
The reward-to-risk is very favorable, with large profits and small losses.
Even if you ride the middle of the trend versus the initial move, the price range you can capture is completely different for the same trend.
2. Once you focus on Dow Theory, you start winning
This is something even very experienced traders say, and I experienced it myself.
In the first five years of trading FX, honestly, nothing worked well. I changed methods, changed indicators, changed risk management rules—and still, stable results weren’t easy to achieve.
The turning point was taking Dow Theory seriously and focusing on it.
Until then, price movements seemed scattered, but the moment I could explain them with a single axis of “trend continuation” and “signs of reversal,” performance began to stabilize.
This is why the entry technique based on catching the initial momentum of trend reversals via Dow Theory has high advantages. There are similar timing indicators, but in the end they are just derivatives of Dow Theory.
There wasn’t a flashy turning point, but rather a grounded, reproducible decision-making ability that emerged.
3. The results are evident
Having a theory that is excellent and actually achieving results are two different things. I have developed multiple EAs based on Dow Theory, and through actual operation, I can confirm the results substantiate it.

Of course, there is no absolute in markets. Nevertheless, not only “the theory makes sense,” but also “the numerical results accumulate,” which I believe is a sufficiently strong reason to choose it.
4. Dow Theory is something everyone is aware of
Another strength of Dow Theory lies in its popularity itself.
Many traders—from institutions to individual traders—refer to the same Dow Theory and make similar judgments at the same key points.
I think this is close to “everyone is looking at the same map.”
In markets, levels that many participants watch tend to function more reliably.
Because it is closer to a “shared language” of market participants rather than a set of minor indicators known only to you, it creates an edge.
5. Works for over 100 years, across currencies and eras
Dow Theory is a foundational theory of market analysis proposed by Charles Dow in the late 19th century.
Even after more than a century, it remains the basis for many technical analyses without fading.
The reason it has endured so long is simple.
It is universal, not limited to a specific currency pair or era. Whether USDJPY or EURUSD, in the 1990s or in the 2020s, the same ideas have functioned similarly.
Methods that come and go fundamentally differ in nature. Thisuniversality—which isthe reliable foundation you can rely on long-term, in my view.
6. Can adapt as the environment changes
The theory itself remains timeless. However, actual market conditions and broker environments are always changing.
My journey began with MT4 testing, then migrated to MT5, and during forward testing I faced many challenges.
Backtests may show good results, but once broker environments change, they may not reproduce as expected. Unrealized profits can grow, but execution timing may not align, and swaps may erode gains—these are practical barriers I faced and tackled with successive versions.I have refined it step by step while confronting these real-world limitations.
Having a solid theory as a foundation and continuing to refine its implementation and operation to adapt to changing environments is a major strength of Dow Theory.
I consider this another major advantage of anchoring to Dow Theory.
7. Not swayed by emotions
Dow Theory is based on objective facts of higher highs and higher lows, enabling judgments without reliance on feelings.
There is little room for guessing that “it will probably rise” or “it should fall soon.”
This isquietly powerful, yet extremely strong.
In trading, the biggest enemy is often one's own emotions.
Fear when in drawdown, greed when profits grow—whether you can act mechanically according to rules without being swayed by these emotions greatly affects long-term results.
And this point is deeply connected to what I’ll discuss next: “EAification.”
Dow Theory: indicators vs. leaving it to an EA
So far I’ve discussed the strengths of Dow Theory itself. How should this theory be translated into actual trading?
Honestly, it becomes quite subjective, butI believe that entering by self-judgment using indicators does not yield good results.
If you’re relying on indicators in the first place, it means you haven’t fully mastered winning yet. Even if you acquire expensive indicators, it’s unlikely to make you win.
I have bought logic systems worth over 50,000 yen, but never won with them.
The logic itself wasn’t worth 50k, but more importantly, in discretionary trading, lot sizing or timing could be off, leading to unsatisfactory trades.
Even if you had a system to notify you of Dow Theory signals, you are often busy during the day and cannot open charts immediately. The perfect entry timing can slip away.
Or, clicking the order button could be a few minutes late, causing you to miss much of the intended price move.
And there is another important point that is easy to overlook.
It isn’t enough to only look at Dow Theory; you must also check the higher-timeframe trend and the lower-timeframe micro-movements to make truly ideal judgments.
Being chased by work and daily life, it isn’t easy to constantly monitor all of this with your own eyes and judgment.
So,What about an automated EA?
An EA based on Dow Theory has shown results and has objective data indicating a certain edge.
Still, I’ll avoid making definitive claims, so allow me to pose a hypothetical: “If this Dow Theory EA were incredibly excellent, what then?”
If that were the case—then the EA would becomean extension of yourself.
Even while you are busy with daytime work, the EA would monitor higher and lower timeframes andquietly assess conditions and trade automatically to accumulate profits.
Even when you are in meetings or commuting on a train, the EA would continue operating tirelessly, following Dow Theory logic and moving mechanically.
In that case, you would stand out dramatically against colleagues and friends.
“I have FX. And right now, while I’m in a meeting, the EA is automatically buying and selling and growing profits. I am not destined to stay stuck at a low wage for life.”——
With a slight, almost hidden smile, you might open MT5 or MT4 on your smartphone during breaks to monitor the automated trading.
That daily life could become a reality.
At least as the developer, I have recently begun to feel that way, so
I was able to turn anxiety about the future into hope.
I wish to be the kind of presence that relieves people from the hard work of paying taxes and pensions for days on end—a beacon that helps overcome despair.
My EA uses a Dow Theory-based entry logic
The EA I am developing is built on Dow Theory, validated with MT4, migrated to the MT5 environment, and continually refined by honestly addressing the challenges observed during actual forward testing.
From entry to exit, it executes mechanically along Dow Theory logic without any emotional interference.
Even if the market moves sharply or unrealized profits rise, it trades calmly according to predefined rules, without being swayed by fear or greed and keeps performing methodically.
While you work or sleep, the EA continues to operate on a foundation that has been used for over a century.
