Chinese CPI and PPI released in the morning were in line with market expectations and had only minor direct impact on gold. The Monday decline is mainly attributed to profit-taking following last week’s rise and position adjustments ahead of tomorrow’s US CPI (April data).
This week's biggest hurdle isUS CPI for May 12 (Tue) 21:30. Gold has been adjusting to the $4,670 area; depending on CPI results, direction could change significantly. Medium-to-long-term fundamentals remain strong: People’s Bank of China gold reserves increasing for 18 months, Goldman Sachs' year-end $5,400 forecast, JPMorgan's $6,300 forecast, etc., with institutional demand and central bank demand supporting the floor. The current decline is viewed as profit-taking-based adjustment, not a major trend reversal.
