“When faced with unavoidable suffering, humans have the freedom to choose what attitude to adopt toward it. And there is meaning in the very act of that choice.” (Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor E. Frankl)
Actually, I haven't read it yet, the 20th-century classic Night and Fog.
When I looked it up with AI, I found it described as follows.
'Night and Fog' is a memoir by Austrian psychiatrist and psychologist
Viktor E. Frankl
(Viktor Emil Frankl, 1905–1997)
about experiences in Nazi concentration camps.
The first edition was in 1946 (in German).
From 1942 to 1945, Frankl was detained in
several concentration camps, including Auschwitz.
This book is said not merely to expose horrifying experiences,
but to record a remarkably calm analysis of the human psyche under extreme conditions.
Upon closer inspection,
it seems he was in Auschwitz for only a few days.
...that place is, after all, a gas chamber.
With that context as well,
the impression of “it looks scary” or “it might make me sick”
tends to come first,
and I suppose I have avoided this book somewhat unintentionally.
There seem to be new and old translations, but this time I chose the old translation.
I hear that the edition includes deliberately grotesque photos.
While researching various things,
a strange curiosity arose,
and I ended up... clicking purchase on Amazon.
The book reportedly contains phrases like these.
“You can take away everything from a person,
but there is one thing you cannot take away.
That is the last freedom—to choose one’s attitude in the given environment,
the meaning of how to respond.”
“When faced with unavoidable suffering,
humans have the freedom to choose how to respond.
And there is meaning in that very choice.”
“People who still have meaning in living survived in the camps,
whereas those who lacked meaning despite physical resilience
died—that seems to have actually occurred.”
...That must be how it was.
If I were to forcefully connect it to FX,
I would ask these questions.
Would those who find meaning in trading survive,
while those who only want to make money would
likely be expelled from the market as a result?
The answer isn’t simple, but
it’s at least worth thinking about.
With the New Year upon us.
Rather than watching TV, I plan to read this book.
...scary, though (laughs)
Well then, until next time.
