“But sometimes luck is also an art” (The Color of Money, film)
From the opening narration of the film "Hustler 2".
<English>
Which is to say, that luck plays a part in nine‑ball. But for some players, luck itself is an art.
<Japanese translation>
In short, nine-ball is a game of luck.But sometimes luck is also an art.。
<Scene>
A scene with Eddie, played by Paul Newman.
A match against a plump, cheerful young Black hustler.
The Black youth jokes around and pretends to miss a shot.
He acts as if he is a weak player, saying things like “I was unlucky,” “Today I have no luck.”
He plays up his supposed fragility.
The youth grins and taunts, “Let’s do it again,” “Shall we raise the stakes this time?”
This spirit of challenging the match.
The earnest youth suddenly becomes strong.
He jokes that “luck has come back,” but
it is not luck but skillful technique itself.
Eddie becomes convinced, “Ah, this guy has been a hustler from the start,”
and quietly places the expanded debt on the table for a double-or-nothing bet.
<My thoughts>
There is a sense of incongruity with the opening narration “But sometimes luck is also an art.”
“But sometimes luck is also a skill.”That would feel more fitting.
I have heard that the word “art” originally also carried the meaning of “technique.”
Perhaps the creator meant a narration with a nuance of “technique.”
Also, the line spoken by the Black youth as he departs at the end was great.
“Luck is scary, you know. Well, I’m just lucky with luck.”
A wry form of modesty...
I too would like to live a life in which luck favors me.
Of course, there must be actual skill as well (laughs).
See you next time.
