An unexpected trigger that drew a Tokyo University graduate to FX

Blacksun isthat he earned a PhD from the University of Tokyoand has been active as a researcher for many years.
What sparked your interest in investing? |

|
|
In fact, I wasn't interested in investing at all at first. One day, when I came home, there was a magazine my family had bought on the dining table, and there I found the word“FX”. |
|
|
|
No, initially it was completely discretionary, and I was buying a lot of AUD/JPY and USD/JPY with the then-popular「yen carry trade」.
At first I felt I could win easily. |
|

Setbacks and turning points during the Subprime and Lehman crises
|
| There was a big turning point after that. |
|
|

Yes. I started about half a year before the subprime loan crisis began, but that caused a major loss.
I think my capital was reduced to nearly half.
Even during the subsequent Lehman Shock, I tried to trade mainly by selling with careful thinking, but I ultimately incurred even bigger losses. |

| So you didn't give up, but turned to learning. |

| Yes. I realized that “you can't win without studying,” and from there I began focusing on technical analysis, especially RCI. |

The beginning and allure of RCI research
|
| Among many indicators, what drew you to RCI? |
|
|

RCI has been a popular indicator since then.
While trying several indicators, I felt that RCI’s shape changes were interesting and could capture market momentum. From there I began thorough research. |

| In the early days, how was it used? |
|
|

At first I looked at RCI on one time frame only, and I thought, “If this pattern holds, I might win,” but it didn’t work at all (laughs).
So I adopted a “Multi-Time Frame Analysis.” |

| I see. After adopting multi-timeframe analysis, how did things change? |

I became able to recognize the overall market environment.
Furthermore, because RCI pairs well with other techniques, by combining it with indicators like moving averages, my trading results became more stable. |
