"The gentleman seeks harmony but not sameness; the petty person is willing to be the same but not harmonious" (Analects)
A quote from Confucius in the classic Chinese text The Analects, in the Zilu chapter.
“The superior man (gentleman) is harmonious but does not conform; the small man imitates but does not achieve true harmony.”
(くんしはわしてどうぜず、しょうじんはどうじてわせず)
<Modern interpretation>
“A noble person harmonizes with others without blindly conforming. A petty person merely imitates and does not achieve genuine harmony.”
I remind myself of this when trading,
and I call it to mind to discipline myself.
When I look at the charts, I find myself being swayed by price movements.
That is, the market and I have become one and the same.
To be the same means being swallowed by the market, in other words.
I am myself, the market is the market; what’s important is to harmonize that relationship.
I tell myself this to avoid losing sight of myself.
This proverb seems perfectly applicable to politics as well right now.
There was news that the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito ended their coalition.
I hear that the Constitutional Democratic Party, the Democratic Party for the People, and Nippon Ishin (Japan Innovation Party) are exploring a coalition.
I hope they won’t simply imitate each other, but instead seek genuine harmony where it’s appropriate.
Takai Akie, congratulations on dissolving the coalition.
Since it was a relationship that had become a rotten bond through entanglements,
it would be healthier to cut it off once.
I know it’s hard, but please continue to seek that one point of harmony.
Even if you do not receive the nomination for prime minister as a result.
Until next time.
