When choosing an EA, the most important thing is to judge based on objective data.

In discretionary trading, results vary with the trader’s psychology and judgment, but since an EA operates by a program, results appear clearly as numbers.

Therefore, professional EA traders always evaluate and select EAs based on data and decide on the operating policy.

What is backtesting?

Backtesting is the process of verifying an EA’s performance using historical market data.

By testing with long-term data such as 10 or 20 years, you can confirm whether the EA can endure various market environments.

For example, if it can maintain a rising profit and loss curve even during major shocks like the Lehman crisis or the COVID crash, its reliability is high.

However, note that backtesting is based on past data and does not guarantee the future.

What is forward testing?

Forward testing is trying the EA in real-time market conditions that are currently progressing.

Running it in actual trading environment reflects performance factors not visible in backtests, such as spreads, order fill stability, and broker characteristics.

Especially for EA beginners, it is safer to first perform a forward test in a demo account to confirm behavior before operating in a real account.

Verifying whether it moves as in the backtest through forward testing is an important process in EA selection.
