Acquire unchanging skills that are essential in a fast-moving era
First, let’s ask about your background, HIRO. Have you been running an internet-related company since 2001? |
| Gogonyan |
| HIRO |
| Yes, I was in the internet advertising business, where information updates quickly and there’s a constant demand for something new. |
| We heard you entered the world of investing in 2004. What prompted that? |
| Gogonyan |
| HIRO |
Internet advertising changes rapidly, and I got tired of that pace. Given that, I was looking for a skill I could use for 10 or 20 years, and the answer was trading. |
I see. What kinds of financial products have you traded up to now? |
| Gogonyan |
| HIRO |
| I started with individual stocks but quickly switched to trading the Nikkei 225 and futures. |
“Averaging down,” “bagholding”... and a 3 million yen loss
| How were your trading results back then? |
| Gogonyan |
| HIRO |
At first, I just kept losing... I had my biggest loss in 2006, and at that time, with “averaging down” and “bagholding,” I ended up with a 3 million yen loss. |
| Cutting losses is tough, isn’t it? After experiencing a big loss, how did you invest afterward? |
| Gogonyan |
| HIRO |
Yes, I began studying technicals in earnest and considered which market technical analysis works best in. The answer was FX, so I’ve been trading exclusively FX since then. |
| I’m curious how you studied technical analysis, HIRO. |
| Gogonyan |
| HIRO |
| Basically, I studied with commercially available books, then verified on real charts and built usable rules. |
Is your investing sustainable? Leaving scalping behind and arriving at Elliott Wave
| Around when did your trading results turn around? |
| Gogonyan |
| HIRO |
Let’s see, by around 2008 I was making a decent income with scalping. As expected, setting rule-based strategies with solid reasoning and sticking to them led to results. I was absolutely strict about keeping stop losses shallow. |
| Do you still trade using scalping now? |
| Gogonyan |
| HIRO |
I scalped for about two to three years, but it requires stamina and concentration. When I asked whether it’s a method I could keep for 10–20 years, the answer was no. So I started exploring Dow Theory, moving averages, and other trend-following methods. |
| What is your current trading style? |
| Gogonyan |
| HIRO |
Basically, I day-trade focusing on the 5-minute and 15-minute charts. I trade using a method based on Elliott Wave principles combined with moving averages and more. |
I see. So that’s your“culmination of trading, ‘Elio-Trading,’right? |
| Gogonyan |
| HIRO |
| Yes, I packaged the trading method using “Elliott Wave” × “moving averages” into a video curriculum. |
From those wanting to move beyond beginner level to those trading in a hedge-fund-like manner, many are looking for a trading method. In the next, second installment, we’ll delve into the core of Elio-Trading. Thank you very much for today. |
