Hello, I’m Hayakawa from Gogojan Co., Ltd. Today's guest has been involved in many financial products such as stocks, mutual funds, cryptocurrencies, and FX for nearly 30 years, and based on that wealth of experience is also known as the developer of the highly reliable EA “SideWinder”ushisama. Today we will deeply explore ushisama’s investment history, how it led to EA development, and what kinds of ideas he uses in his development work. Now, please, let’s begin. |
| | | GogoJyan Hayakawa |
| Nice to meet you, I’m ushisama. I too initially faced big losses with discretionary trading, and endured a tough period. From there I realized the importance of logic not relying on emotions and began developing EA. Today I’d like to talk about that experience and the background of SideWinder’s development. |
30 years of investing history. From individual stocks to FX and cryptocurrencies |
| ushisama, you originally come from the IT industry, but when did you start investing? |
| | | GogoJyan Hayakawa |
 | | ushisama |
| It started about 30 years ago. Initially I began with individual stock trading. I also did some Japanese stocks early on, but having been with a foreign-affiliate company, I gradually shifted to US stocks. |
| That was quite early. Now FX is the main focus, but what prompted the move from stocks to FX? |
| | | GogoJyan Hayakawa |
 | | ushisama |
| | Stocks have many scenarios where short-term moves are hard to read… I felt that technical analysis is easier to apply in FX. |
| During the meeting you also touched on cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, correct? |
| | | GogoJyan Hayakawa |
 | | ushisama |
| | Yes. I held Bitcoin in its early days, so I’d like to develop an EA for Bitcoin in the future as well. |
The Discretionary Trading Failures and the Push Toward EA Development |
| FX began in earnest around 2010, but you started with discretionary trading at first, right? |
| | | GogoJyan Hayakawa |
 | | ushisama |
| | Yes. I didn’t know about Expert Advisors at the time, and started with discretionary trading. I had ups and downs, not stable, and a particularly memorable big loss during a regime change. |
| | | GogoJyan Hayakawa |
 | | ushisama |
| | When the yen weakened, I expected a USD/JPY long and had about 10,000,000 yen in unrealized gains, but I thought, “It won’t go up any more,” and I dumped too late… it went up further and I took a big loss. |
| That’s a shock… What did you learn from that experience? |
| | | GogoJyan Hayakawa |
 | | ushisama |
| | Still,“gut feeling”and emotionsare not reliablelot management—that became clear. The importance of statistical backing and, above all,. That’s when I decided to shift to EA. |
To create an EA that keeps winning for a long time—Pitfalls and countermeasures in backtesting |
| What are the key points you emphasize in EA development? |
| | | GogoJyan Hayakawa |
 | | ushisama |
| First of all, the reliability of backtesting. I don’t think testing with just MT4 historical data is meaningful. The reason is that historical data have low precision and can only be tested over a short period. In forward testing, results can be completely different. |
| Then how do you validate it? |
| | | GogoJyan Hayakawa |
 | | ushisama |
| | TDS (Tick Data Suite) is used to validate with high-precision tick data from around 2000 onward. Timeframes are centered on 1-minute candles, assessing stability over a long period. |
With such thorough validation, SideWinder has been used in real accounts for over 6 years. Today, we’re thankful to hear a very real discussion about the logic and the system for lasting profitability that ushisama has arrived at through years of trial and error. |
| | | GogoJyan Hayakawa |
 | | ushisama |
| | Thank you as well. I hope my mistakes and learnings will be hints for those embarking on trading. |
The SideWinder logic and features are so fascinating that I’d like to ask in more detail in Part 2. |
