Hello, this is Hayakawa from Gogojan, Inc. Our guest this time is a full-time trader who built a unique trading style that trades with only “candlesticks” after a five-year slump where success seemed unattainable. With over 15 years of experience as a full-time trader, he pursues a reproducible “no-discretion trading” approach based on his past experiences. Today, we’ll thoroughly talk with such a Candlestick FX Trader about how he overcame the period of not winning, and how he realized the essence of “candlesticks.” Now, let’s get started. |

 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| Nice to meet you. I am Candlestick FX Trader. During my first five years, I didn’t win at all and it was really tough, but at one point I realized the importance of looking at the current candlesticks, not the past. Today, I’d like to share my experience in hopes it provides some hints for everyone.

Introduction of Candlestick FX Trader |
| First, could you give a brief self-introduction? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | Yes, I live overseas and trade using just one smartphone. I’ve been working as a full-time trader for about 15 years. While running several businesses overseas, I have also traded FX in parallel. |
| When did you first become interested in investing? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | About 20 years ago, I started with stock investing. Due to financial factors, it was difficult, so I shifted to FX. |
| Why are you fixed on candlesticks? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | I believe the essence of the market is captured in candlesticks. Without being misled by unnecessary indicators, you can see the essence. |
Early trading mistakes and lessons |
| You mentioned that the first five years of trading didn’t go as hoped. What mistakes did you make, specifically? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | Yes, I chased past chart patterns and logics, and could not adapt to future changes.I couldn’t adapt to future changesFor example, even if a logic had worked for several months in the past, I continued to apply it as-is into the future. |
| So you were clinging to past successes, right? How did that feel at the time? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | That’s exactly right. When I felt I had found a winning logic, I believed it was universal and kept using it without worry. But the market is always moving, and I failed to notice the changing environment, which led to more losses. |
| I see. After such failures, what did you learn? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| The biggest lesson is that the market keeps changing. Rather than relying solely on past data or performance, you mustalways observe the current market and respond flexibly. |
Pitfalls of past backtesting |
| You were very diligent about backtesting historical charts. Specifically, what methods did you use? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | I mainly used FOREX Tester and historical data from MT4 to try various indicator and parameter combinations. |
| Despite such thorough testing, why couldn’t you apply it to actual trading? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | Past market patterns existed and worked for a time, but those patterns often disappeared due to market changes. |
| I see. From those experiences, did your methods or mindset change? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | Yes, backtesting is important but do not rely on it too much, focus on developing discretionary skills and market awareness to adapt in real time.. |
Discretionary trading and emotions |
| Later, you also took on discretionary trading. What emotional challenges did you face after switching? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | Discretionary trading involves personal judgment, so emotions strongly affect decisions. When profits came, I felt “there may be more room to run” and greed appeared, and when losses occurred, I hesitated to cut losses hoping for a rebound. |
| What kind of trades did that lead to? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | I often ended up taking profits too early or unable to cut losses, resulting in overall losses. |
| At that time, how were you trading? Also, what do you think caused emotional influences? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | Discretionary trading relies heavily on experience and intuition, and emotional brakes are easily activated. The desire for profits can dull calm judgment, and the fear of losses can delay necessary cuts. |
| Did you realize these issues caused any changes in your thinking? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | I understood that discretionary trading is emotionally tricky, so I started addressing not only simple rules but also facing my own mentality. |
What is the mindset to adapt to market changes? |
| Currently, what method do you use to trade? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | Only Candlesticks are looked at, with simple rules for trading. Basically, completed with just one smartphone. |
| Based on your experience, what is the most important thing to adapt to market changes? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | Since the market is always changing, it’s most important not to cling to past methods and to adapt flexibly to the current market conditions. |
| What is a common challenge for traders who cannot adapt to market changes? |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | Many people cling too much to past successes, and when that no longer works, their response is slow. If they cannot accept change, it can lead to large losses. |
I see. Since discretionary trading was difficult, I’m very curious how you managed to overcome that over these 15 years as a full-time trader. I’d like to hear more in Part 2. Please do share in the second installment. |
| | | Gogojan Hayakawa |
 | | Candlestick FX Trader |
| | Yes, I’d be happy to discuss further. |
