The situation in the Middle East continues to escalate. In the early hours of June 22, the U.S. military began attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities. President Trump had announced a two-week grace period, but instead launched the attack two days later, catching the market off guard. Consequently, the outlook at the open of last week and this Monday is completely different.

The U.S. attack in the late hours of the 22nd was named the Midnight Hammer operation. Rather than sheathing a raised fist as before, this time the hammer was swung down. Trump likely disliked being nicknamed “TACO.” He must have wanted to convey to the world that “when we act, we act.” Whether this strategy will pay off or backfire remains unpredictable. We can only watch. Iran has begun moves to close the Strait of Hormuz. The war situation is becoming bogged down. Although Iran and Russia have an agreement, Russia is tied up in Ukraine, and last year even sought aid from Iran and North Korea. Therefore, the U.S. preemptively attacked Iran thinking Russia would not intervene. This attack is seen as a chance to strike Iran while the moment is favorable.
