DAY 54: Monitoring of multiple EA and logic operation
DAY 53 focused onSetting annual goals and measuring performanceand the importance of viewing trading on a “yearly” basis, as well as the benefits of using metrics such as PF and drawdown.
Today’sDAY 54will take this further and explain the具体 methods for monitoringmultiple EAs (automatic trading) and multiple discretionary logicsin parallel, and the key points for risk management to anticipate.
If you run many strategies simultaneously, they may complement each other to give a sense of “stable profits,” butcorrelation riskandmanagement costsalso increase. This time, we’ll look at how to run and monitor them smoothly.
1. Why is there an increase in running multiple EAs and logics?
-
Pursuit of diversification
- With only one EA or method, there are periods when the market environment isn’t favorable, leading to large drawdowns.
- Operating multiple strategies makes unfavorable markets less aligned, and the overall equity curve tends to be smoother.
-
Advancement of automation & hybrid with discretion
- Recently, you can obtain EAs without programming knowledge, making it easier to run multiple EAs.
- Using discretion alongside them allows flexible response to sharp market moves and fundamental factors.
-
Spread of tools for validation
- Backtesting and forward testing functions are well-developed, enabling quick validation of many EAs.
- Operations with VPS and multiple MT4/MT5 allow parallel running, lowering the hurdle to run multiple strategies.
2. Important points for monitoring multiple EAs and logics
(1) Understanding total risk
-
**“If you run many EAs, the position size may increase automatically”** to avoid
- EA A may have 3 sell positions on the same currency pair, EA B may have 2 sell positions… totaling 5 positions.
- A mechanism to manage total lotsis necessary, otherwise a single adverse move could cause large losses.
-
Do not hold too many positions in the same currency in the same direction
- Check USD/JPY long, GBP/JPY long, EUR/JPY long, etc., to ensure you’re not heavily selling the yen.
- A risk-off yen rally could cause major damage.
(2) Regular checks of performance individually and overall
- Collect monthly/weekly performance for each EA (win rate, PF, DD)
- By understanding which EAs perform in trends and which in ranges, you can consider turning them ON/OFF depending on market conditions.
- Total performance
- Compute the total DD and PF combining all EAs and discretion.
- Observe monthly how much capital drops during losing streaks and whether the maximum DD is getting too large.
(3) Rule-based ON/OFF
- EAs that should always stop before major events
- Use features to manually or automatically stop during times of heavy spread widening, such as jobs data or FOMC announcements.
- EAs that struggle in certain markets should downsize or pause
- If a range-trading EA is losing streaks in a trending environment, pause it.
- Conversely, turn ON only when a trend-type EA seems likely to work, specify “operating hours” or “environment.”
(4) Introducing dashboards and management tools
- A panel for consolidated monitoring
- A tool that lists current positions per EA, current lots held, cumulative P/L, DD, spread status, etc., is convenient.
- You can build a personalized dashboard using some programming or plug-ins.
- Aggregation risk with discretion
- If discretion positions and EAs share the same account, you can view all positions in the “Accounts tab,” butmanaging the EA side becomes complex.
- Alternatively, use separate accounts and synchronize total lots and DD via tables or spreadsheets.
3. Concrete flow for multi-EA and discretion trading
-
Morning or before trading starts
- Check each EA’s results from the previous day and reset total lots and P/L to start fresh.
- Check scheduled indicators and market environment → roughly judge whether a trend will develop today or if the market will stay ranging.
- If needed, turn off underperforming market EAs and adjust by increasing or keeping normal the lot sizes for those that seem to have a favorable edge.
-
Active monitoring
- If spreads widen rapidly before an indicator, manually pause EAs and halt discretion for quick response.
- Check that the number of positions isn’t getting too large and that there isn’t excessive bias in the same direction.
- If discretion directions appear to clash, reduce lot size or adjust.
-
After closing or in daily/weekly review
- Aggregate win rates, PF, DD for each EA and the discretion results → evaluate total results.
- If there are EAs with continued losses or higher drawdowns, analyze causes and consider pausing or adjusting settings.
- If there have been sudden changes due to unexpected news, reassess the market environment and prepare for the next day.
4. Note: the traps of over-diversification and optimization
- Too many EAs become unmanageable
- Running 10 or 20 EAs simultaneously makes it hard to track total lots and DD.
- Rather than increasing endlessly, focus on 2–3 well-suited onesfor easier monitoring.
- Optimization traps
- Repeated backtesting with aggressive tuning for a specific period can lead to results that do not hold in real markets. This does not translate to real-market performance.
- Avoid overtrading discretion
- When EAs are winning in trend, discretion may add counter-trend entries, causing swings in P/L due to clashes.Conflicts can occur, leading to volatility.
5. Summary & upcoming WEEK8 developments
Summary
- Benefits of operating multiple EAs and logics: Strong against changing market environments and helps stabilize drawdown.
- Key points: Total risk management (correlations, lot limits), regular monitoring of each EA’s performance, and rules linking EA and discretion.
- Note: Increasing the number of EAs and strategies can complicate management and lead to optimization traps. Narrow the number, and use monitoring tools and dashboards to keep operations simple.
What’s next in WEEK8
- DAY 54 (this article) focused onmonitoring of multiple EAs and logicsfor operation.
- DAY 55–57will, throughfurther develop annual planning and ongoing learningmanufacture a framework for long-term trading life, etc.
- Finally, DAY 58–60 willprovide a final wrap-up of this learning courseto help everyone draft their own “personal completion.”
