On the night of the 2nd, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would begin imposing tariffs on imports from the European Union “soon.” He answered questions from reporters, including BBC journalists, as he arrived at a Maryland military base on his way back from his private residence in Florida to the White House.
Trump criticized the EU for having “really used us to their advantage,” and said, “They do not accept American cars, nor our agricultural products. They accept almost nothing from us, while we accept millions of cars and vast quantities of food and agricultural products, and more, from them.”
When BBC asked whether there was a schedule for the tariff announcement against the EU, Trump replied, “I can’t say there is a schedule, but it’s coming quite soon.” In response to a question about whether Britain would be targeted by tariffs, he said, “Let’s see how it goes. Probably yes.” When pressed for more meaning, he changed his tone and said, “Perhaps that’s what will happen,” shifting the focus to concerns about trade with the EU, and stated, “That’s certainly going to happen with the European Union.”
Furthermore, Trump said, “Britain is overreaching. But that can be improved somehow.”The president also stated that Prime Minister Theresa May of the UK has been very kind so far, adding, “I have met with her several times and spoken on the phone many times. It’s going very well.”Trump said he plans to discuss tariffs with the leaders of Canada and Mexico as well on the 3rd. The heavy tariffs he ordered to be imposed by executive order on those two countries and China are expected to take effect around midnight on the 4th.On the 1st, Trump announced a 25% tariff on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, and a 10% tariff on energy imports from Canada. Each country has announced countermeasures such as retaliatory tariffs in response to U.S. imports.
