【Tokyo University Graduate, Encounter with Investing】 |
Today we'll hear from Blacksun, who after completing the PhD program at The University of Tokyo and working in a research role, encountered FX. First, could you tell us about your encounter with FX? |

Nice to meet you. My encounter with FX happened when I was flipping through a magazine at home one day. In an article I read that “FX can profit whether you buy or sell,” and I suddenly became very interested in this world. |
At that time, I was looking for something interesting, not just in investing. I never imagined that a magazine I happened to have at home would lead me to become so absorbed in FX. |
【Heaven and Hell】 The frenzy of the yen carry trade and the impact of the subprime shock |
| You started FX a little before the subprime loan issue in 2007; what were the market conditions like at that time? |

Back then, the yen carry trade was booming, and it was an upward trend where buying USD/JPY or AUD/JPY without much thought could yield profits. I started investing with a light-hearted mindset of “just buy for now.” |

【Turning Failures into Lessons】 An event that sparked my researcher's spirit |
| Then, you told us you made profits by shorting at the time of the Lehman Shock. |

Yes. I studied a bit more in response to the subprime crash. In the following year's Lehman shock, I was able to make a certain amount of profit by shorting, applying lessons learned. |
However, what happened next was the problem. I came to believe AUDJPY would fall further and, in a rush, I sold aggressively, which ultimately wiped out profits. More than that, I even reduced the original capital. |
Even the original capital...? How did you recover from there? |
There was a period of a sharp decline. But at the same time, I learned that FX is interesting. From there, I started studying and researching seriously, and choosing the popular indicator “RCI” as my research topic was, in a sense, a restart as a trader. |
I see. Because of the big failure, you decided to devote yourself to the path of research, didn’t you? Next time, we’d like to ask you more about the details of that RCI research. Thank you for today’s valuable story! |
