Characteristics and challenges of discretionary trading

In discretionary trading, techniques such as trend following, buying on dips, and selling on rallies are often used.

For myself, I aim to profit in the direction of the trend, and even if the win rate drops, I value capturing large price moves.

When the chart moves in a way different from the expected pattern during trading, I often close early to minimize losses.

Emotional judgments: during trading, emotions can lead to unplanned entries or exits.

Time constraints: busy with work or chores, you may miss opportunities when unable to monitor charts.

The essence of an EA – trades at timings humans cannot

The EA I developed is based on discretionary trading, but does not have to rely on the same method.

EA is often developed to supplement the biases and limits of discretionary trading and executes entries and exits at timings humans find difficult.

For example, at timings discretionary trading tends to avoid, contrarian timing, the EA can automatically enter and take profits.

This is because, even at timings where human senses would hesitate due to fear or anxiety, the EA objectively judges the market and trades automatically based on logic.

In this way, the EA has trades that only an EA can do. This can be called the EA’s true essence.

EA advantages verified by long-term data

Moreover, a major benefit of EA is that its logic has been tested across long historical periods.

Human discretionary trading is often not deeply tested with historical data, making it unclear whether its edge holds in all market conditions.

On the other hand, EA is tested through backtesting to confirm effectiveness across all past market conditions before use.

This enables EA to adapt to various market environments over the long term and demonstrate a reasonable edge in any market.

For example, even timing that discretionary traders tend to miss, the EA can automatically enter and catch market moves.

Looking at the long term, total profits can be positive.

Role of EA in complementing discretionary trading

Discretionary trading has drawbacks such as emotional judgments and inability to respond to sudden market changes.

But EA compensates for those drawbacks and autonomously controls profits and losses. In other words,

EA plays a role in supplementing human discretionary trading.
