Tokyo time, Bank of Japan Governor Ueda stated at the House of Representatives Financial Affairs and Monetary Committee that he would “adjust the degree of monetary easing,” and that “a weaker yen could affect the outlook and its risks,” making the dollar/yen rise briefly to145.30yen. However, in Governor Ueda's afternoon testimony, he said, “There is no difference in thinking about monetary policy compared with Deputy Governor Uchida. Uchida’s statements were appropriate,” and the dollar/yen rebounded to around145.90yen. In European time, the dollar/yen moved without a clear direction in the145yen zone.New Yorktime, at the Jackson Hole meeting, Fed Chair Powell said that the policy needed to be adjusted, reaffirmed that inflation is on a path toward2%, and stated that the labor market will not welcome any further deceleration, taking a dove stance. In the market, the nextFOMC(9/17-18) is almost clearly signaling a rate cut, and the dollar/yen fell to144.04yen.
