For someone with such a background, Okumura’s journey in finance began with quants.

Back then it was called “quants,” but when Okumura went to America, the United States was in a severe recession with a large trade deficit and many were being laid off.

Even NASA engineers were not exempt; many engineers were laid off in those days.

In such a brutal era, although it’s unclear whether talented engineers sought revenge or redemption, many brilliant minds flocked to Wall Street seeking high salaries, which led to the explosive rise of fintech.

Okumura went to America in the 1980s.

For those who know Dr. Sharpe’s name but aren’t quite sure what he did, here is a brief introduction to Dr. Sharpe’s greatness.

An American economist and a professor at Stanford University. In 1990, he received the Nobel Prize in Economics for work on a general theory of asset allocation to improve the safety of asset management alongside Harry Markowitz.

The underlying theory was the “Modern Portfolio Theory.”
Holding multiple assets reduces risk; diversification effects allow risk reduction.
It is surprising that the theoretical framework was developed in the United States in the 1980s!


The theory suggests stock picking has only about a 4% influence. Asset management should be diversified, holding different assets to form stable asset growth.



This basic idea of diversification forms the bedrock of modern investment theory, and being able to study it closely with world-class engineers and economists allowed Okumura to witness the foundations of modern investment theory up close, which has become his guiding motto.

Okumura’s motto

There is no decision that is ever too late.

I thought that this motto was shaped by that history I heard in the interview.

And

Seeing great predecessors up close has been a driving force for continued growth.

He spoke about Dr. Sharpe with such enthusiasm and pride that one might think he was enjoying it.
He noted that during graduate studies he pursued AI, and wondered if the intersection of finance and technology lay in a securities firm, so he joined one. From there, he learned and nurtured fintech, which shaped the present Okumura.
