The U.S. stock market rebounded, with buying returning to small- and mid-cap indices, transport stocks, and utilities, lifting the overall market after a prolonged decline.
The Michigan Sentiment Index released that day showed consumer sentiment well below market expectations, while inflation expectations rose to the highest level in 12 years, delivering mixed signals.
However, the retreat of concerns about prolonged monetary tightening outweighed the negative sentiment, and the prospect of a U.S.-China summit on the 15th also supported investor sentiment.
With expectations of easing U.S.-China trade frictions, the Semiconductor SOX index rose by over 4%, and the upward revision by Tokyo Electron Limited (TYO: 8035), announced yesterday, contributed to buying and a sense of reassurance.
Weekly indices show all three major U.S. indices rising vs. last week’s close; the Semiconductor SOX index and S&P 100 index also closed above last week’s close.
Indices for transportation stocks, utilities, S&P 400, and Russell 2000, which had been in a downtrend until yesterday, finished the week lower on a weekly basis.
Nikkei futures and after-hours trading rose; gains in U.S. stocks and demand for high-tech shares also supported.
The close of Chicago 225 futures (as of 11th 6:59) at 32,820 yen; Moody's reportedly lowered the U.S. outlook, narrowing the gains to close higher.
High (OSE) 32,925 yen (11th 5:29), low 32,420 yen (10th 20:48).
