NYSE close, Nikkei futures, after-hours trading
The NY stock market rose over the weekend; by the close, the gains narrowed but finished higher across the board.
The employment report released at 9:30 p.m. on the 6th showed a much higher-than-expected gain in payrolls (NFP), with August payrolls revised up. The initial reaction was bond selling (yields rising) and a stronger dollar, with stock losses.
The Dow Industrials fell briefly by over 200 points, but buying gradually dominated, and wage growth (average hourly earnings) remained at levels not seen since February this year.
The unemployment rate worsened versus expectations, and although the bond market rallied on the overall employment data, buying gradually emerged; it did not provide convincing certainty for the next rate hike.
For the week’s performance, the S&P 500 rose on a weekly basis, both the Nasdaq indices rose for the second consecutive week along with the Semiconductor SOX index, while the other S&P 100 (large-cap) rose on a weekly basis.
The declines were in the Nikkei futures, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, transportation stocks, utilities, and mid/small-cap indices such as the S&P 400 and Russell 2000.
Nikkei futures and after-hours trading rose, to 31,335 yen, up 315 yen. The high was 31,395 yen at 3:35, and the low was 30,855 yen at 21:53.
